Curriculum

Our program prepares graduates to be successful in a variety of educational settings by emphasizing the following:

 

  • Proficiency in the content areas of their educational objective
  • Expectations for work ethic and high standards for students
  • Commitment to ongoing personal and professional growth
  • Classroom Management strategies 
  • Lesson Planning with backward design
  • Use of modifications and interventions for special populations                                     
  • Presentations that incorporate varied instruction for diverse populations

 

These expectations will be met through the following activities:

 

Survival Course for Teachers – 5 Weeks – 10 lessons – 30 hours

 

In this phase the program stresses the following skills development:

 

·         Preparation for the beginning of the school year

·         Development and implementation of lesson plans

·         Maintenance and accuracy in grade books , report  cards, and other required documents

·         Application of classroom and behavior support strategies 

 

       Survival Course II:

 

      50 hours of outside work including homework, observations in schools, tutor and/or content area study

 

 

Pre-Internship – 70 Hours of Pre-teaching Experience

 

The Pre-Internship hours are completed in diverse situations such as:

 


·         Staff Development & Training for students currently teaching

·         Tutoring in a school setting (one-on-one and/or small group)

·         Volunteering in a school setting (Classroom, extra-curricular, etc.)

·         Developing activities for individual students or groups of students under the direction of an experienced teacher

·         Documentation of additional study in their content area

 

Pedagogy Preparation- 25 Weeks - 50 Lessons – 150 Hours

 

·         Preparation for the TExES exams,

·         Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities training

·         Subject content training

·         Courses will be delivered using traditional classroom, cooperative groups, project based learning, web-base instruction subject area, etc. 

 

Upon entering the Pedagogy Preparation component, the Teacher-Candidate may seek employment with an approved public or accredited private school and apply for their Probationary certificate with School Board for Educator Certification. Teacher-Candidate must be “Highly Qualified” prior to applying for teaching positions.

 

INTERNSHIP  36-72 weeks

 

·         Employment as a teacher

·         Mentor is assigned

·         Field Supervisor will assist in guiding you through your first year of teaching

·         Must be Highly Qualified in order to be hired

·         Assistance with job placement.
